       The 2009 McGlothlin Awards for Teaching Excellence
 

How to Apply

Classroom teachers may be nominated or may nominate themselves. McGlothlin Foundation and Blue Ridge Public Television staff and families are not eligible. The following elements should be completed and sent to Blue Ridge Public Television, P.O. 13246, Roanoke, VA 24032, postmarked no later than November 7, 2008:

Curriculum Vitae or Resume that lists:

  • Education history

  • Employment history

  • Continuing professional development

  • Awards / honors

  • Conference or other presentations

  • Volunteer service to the community

Three letters of recommendation. Send only 3 letters; these must not exceed two pages each. Suggested sources: principals, supervisors, parents, and colleagues, current or former students.

Add a personal statement about your teaching (Limit is two (2) typewritten pages), that demonstrates how you exemplify the criteria of the McGlothlin Awards. Be sure to provide specific examples of your teaching to support your statement. Include answers to these important points:

  • How do you bring the world to your classroom?

  • How will you spend the $10,000.00 international travel allowance if you are awarded?

If you are chosen as a semi-finalist for Round Two, you must submit a standards-based lesson plan with a 20-minute video of yourself teaching a lesson in your classroom, by January 16, 2009. Do not send a videotape and lesson until you are notified that you are a semi-finalist. Finalists will be asked to grant rights to publish their lessons and/or use their videos on websites, in print, or on the air.

Finally, the Judges in committees of three will make on-site observation visits to 6 finalists' classrooms, between February 9 and March 20, 2009.

The 2009 McGlothlin Awards for Teaching Excellence will be presented at Radford University APRIL 6, 2008. Please mark your calendars to join us for the celebration of teaching!
